Douglas Kwarlpe Abbott was born in 1948 at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) and grew up near Idracowra on the banks of the Finke River, south of Alice Springs. In this painting, Abbott has depicted the ‘Organ Pipes’, a rock formation in Glen Helen Gorge on the Finke River, which lies 130 kilometres west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell National Park.
According to their kinship system, Abbott is regarded as a grandson of the esteemed watercolourist Albert Namatjira. As a young boy, Abbott watched Namatjira paint alongside his cousin, Clem Abbott, and other members of the original Hermannsburg watercolourists.
