Hector Jandany was born at Warmun (Turkey Creek) in Western Australia. His mother, a Gija woman, was also born there, and Jandany refers to their Country in the title of his painting. Ngarrgooroon Country occupies the north-east section of Purnululu (the Bungle Bungle sandstone ranges) near Warmun, now part of Texas Downs Station.
Jandany worked on the Texas Downs Station for many years, mustering cattle and working as a camp cook. This allowed him to access his ancestral lands and participate in ceremonial life. Jandany began painting in Warmun in 1979, with the establishment of the Bough Shed School, and later became its Chair. He and other Gija artists used their paintings to help strengthen bilingual teaching in their community.
