In this work, Mabel Juli tells of the Dreaming story of her mother’s Country of Darragyn (Springvale Station). According to the narrative, a young boy, Juwurru, is presented with two girls for an arranged marriage. As he was in love with their mother, Darwool, who was ‘wrong way’ (or an inappropriate choice, as determined by skin systems) for him, he refused to pick either daughter as his wife. Juwurru’s elders became angry at his refusal and cast him out. He walked angrily to the top of a hill, where he cursed the group below him before turning into Karrgin (the moon). The two girls turned into wardul (the evening and morning stars) and their mother, who was cursed, became the black-headed snake that roams through Darragyn Country.
Each month as the moon comes back to life, Gija people are reminded to respect the rules of the ‘right way’ of marriage.
