Kitty Kantilla created designs indicative of her skin group, ‘fire’, and often referred to specific bones or wrinkles in the body; the word jilamara translates as ‘good design’ or ‘body painting’. In her application of these designs, Kantilla exemplified the Tiwi people’s continuing use of this ancestral mode of mark-making and combined the use of modern and traditional implements in her art, including brushes and coconut sticks.
