Patju Presley is an important Anangu Spinifex artist, and was among the first wave of Anangu painters to emerge in the early 2000s from the community of Irrunytju. In this painting, he has depicted Country associated with the Kalaya Tjukurpa (Emu Creation Line).
Presley has represented the significant site of Kalaya Piti, a rockhole in the Birksgate Range in north-western South Australia. According to Presley’s Dreaming, this is where a large group of emu men from the west made camp. They performed sacred traditional inma (dancing) to celebrate their arrival; the creation beings held the power to transform the landscape as they moved through it, leaving behind indelible physical and cultural reminders of their presence.
