In X X NO FRACKING! 2018–19, Mervyn Rubuntja mounts a compelling case against gas fracking on traditional lands. He was prompted to begin the artwork in 2018, just prior to the expiration of the Northern Territory’s three-year moratorium on the invasive mining process. In the painting, Rubuntja warns of the impending destruction of the environment and the cultural practices threatened by the industry.
Mindful of the high levels of air and water pollution that result from fracking, and the serious health impacts for communities associated with the activity, Rubuntja states: ‘It’s not good, the water is poisoned’. He says he paints his homeland in response to the promises that successive governments have broken on the issue. Despite this, Rubuntja’s depiction of Country represents hope for a future in which his people can return home to build infrastructure and create constructive work opportunities.
