EXPANDED LABEL: 2022.191 GOSS
Peter Goss, a born Londoner and former Royal Marine, found his true calling in Australia as a glass artist. He migrated to Australia in 1973 and, after a short stint as a motor mechanic, dived into the world of glass art at the JamFactory, Adelaide, under the guidance of Sam Herman and Stanislav Melis. Goss’s talent led him to establish Paraison Studio Glass in Tewantin in 1981, thanks to a Workshop Development Grant from the Crafts Board of the Australia Council.
Peter Goss is best known as Queensland’s pioneering hot-work studio glass artist. His glass creations showcase his unique style and working technique. His most acclaimed series, the ‘shell forms’, encapsulate his love for the coastal environment, with each piece reflecting the intricate details of sea shells and coral formations. Goss’s solo approach to his work, facilitated by the use of locally-sourced ironbark timber moulds, results in asymmetrical shapes and textured appearances that are distinctly his own.
One of his notable works, Vase 1989, a free-blown vessel of opalescent green and translucent gold overlaid with clear glass, showcases the colour vibrancies that can be achieved through the use of ‘Kugler glass’ rods. Its design and colours, evoking perhaps the Sunshine Coast's landscape and and evening skies, make it an enchanting representation of Goss's artistic journey and his love for his adopted home. Despite closing Paraison Studios in 1991, Goss continues to inspire artists across Australia.
