This large-scale drawing of the artist’s cousin was created for the 16th Biennale of Sydney (2008), as one of 12 works entitled ‘What is an Aborigine?’. In this work, Ah Kee captures Lenny’s visage in affectionate detail, including his fixed stare, which appears to reach out from the canvas. Ah Kee has explained:
When you look at their gaze, you can see persistence and endurance. They’re not about sadness; they’re not even about frustration. They’re about endurance. Like all of us blackfellas, it’s about picking up and . . . not going away. We’re still here.
