Mike Brown believed firmly in the democratisation of art. He transformed the everyday clutter and chaos of graffiti and the sign-laden vistas of urban life into an art for everyone. Train home 1962 is a classic early work, comprised of 12 numbered portraits on paper, adhered in a grid pattern on board. The faces are colourful and rudimentary, perhaps referencing individuals travelling on suburban Sydney trains. The subjects’ improvised forms reflect Brown’s mining of the subconscious as a source of creativity.
