Since 2008, Jemima Wyman has built an extensive archive of images of protesters from around the world wearing masks and makeshift camouflage uniforms. In her ‘Aggregate Icon’ series, the artist prints and hand-cuts dozens of these images, arranging them into mandala-like collages. The protesters in Aggregate Icon (Kaleidoscopic Catchment) 2014 wear fluorescent tie-dye as their uniform — a camouflage that hides their individual identities but draws attention to the group through its lurid colours. Wyman’s work shows how protest uniforms subsume individuals into the mass of the group, emphasising collective power and giving those who wear them strength in numbers. In this, visual patterns become symbols of resistance.
