EXPANDED LABEL: 'Blood Generation' series / HAVINI
By Ruth McDougall
‘sis’ August 2023
Taloi Havini represents a generation of Bougainvilleans facing unique challenges, having come of age following the violent civil war with Papua New Guinea (1988–98), in which some 20 000 people lost their lives and many more were displaced, including the artist’s family. Havini’s ‘Blood Generation’ series, dating from 2009, is dedicated to the generation born during this time of instability. Created in collaboration with her maternal cousin, Australian photographer Stuart Miller, these photographic portraits highlight the experiences of Bougainville’s youth, who grieve for their lands that have been ravaged by mining. As Havini states: ‘For Bougainvilleans, land is everything’.
