Cameron Mulrunji Doomadgee was the 147th Aboriginal person to die in police custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, conducted from 1987 to 1991. In the wake of his death on Palm Island in 2004, the community erupted in grief and violence, led by ‘tall man’ Lex Wotton, who was later convicted for his role. Vernon Ah Kee’s Tall Man 2010 conveys the urgency and chaos that clearly defined the riots by piecing together amateur video, clips from mobile phones, handheld cameras, CCTV and TV news reels to reconstruct crucial perspectives that were lacking in mainstream media coverage. By redeploying the very imagery used in Wotton’s trial, Ah Kee engages his audience with new narratives while interrogating concepts of justice, truth and the constructed nature of history.
