Vincent Sheldon was Queensland’s most prominent printmaker between the world wars and he also worked in watercolour. However, his art-making was necessarily secondary to his work as a commercial artist, which provided his primary source of income. In 1929, he travelled to England to study printmaking in London. This scene would have been completed when Sheldon’s ship docked in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), on the voyage to England.
