Thomas Pilgrim was born in Beaudesert, but spent the greater part of his life in the Tweed River region. This work is one of several versions of the subject that Pilgrim painted in both watercolours and oils between the years c.1960 and c.1989. The artist revealed his interest in the area:
The Currumbin Valley is a short valley with the Queensland/New South Wales border running along the mountains and slopes. The valley is very colourful and subject to change of mood and atmosphere.
