Yasmin Smith is known for her research-based ceramic installations that reflect natural landscapes. As part of her process, Smith gathers and burns a range of vegetation, and incorporates the ash into her unique glazes. The minerals, nutrients and toxins that the plants have absorbed from the soil and water in which they were grown remain in the ash and transform into different colours and textures during kiln firing.
For Flooded Rose Red Basin 2018, Smith worked with the Jinhui Ceramic Sanitary Ware Factory, located in the Sichuan province of China. Referencing Chinese ceramic traditions and the rapid development changing the landscapes of Sichuan and surrounding provinces, she cast bamboo and flooded gum branches collected in the area. Also known as rose gum, flooded gum is a fast-growing eucalypt that, while planted in the region to aid soil regeneration, has inadvertently diverted water from local flora. Smith also burnt offcuts of the respective plants to make glazes for her cast sculptures.
