BIO: CG Gibbs
1906, Yackandandah, Vic. – 1992, Brisbane
Cyril Gordon Gibbs graduated from the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries in 1929, and taught part time at Swinburne Technical College, Melbourne, from 1929 to 1931. He also taught in Sydney for three years before moving in 1934 to Brisbane, where he set up a commercial art studio in 1936. In 1934, he also succeeded FJ Martyn Roberts to become the third head of the art school at Brisbane’s Central Technical College; he acted in this position until his retirement in 1971. Gibbs was a trustee of the Queensland National Art Gallery from 1946 to 1959 — overseeing the appointment of its first director Robert Campbell in 1949 — and was a member of the Gallery’s Advisory Committee for ten years.
