Douglas Green studied at the Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT University). Enlisting in the army in 1941, he was attached to the Royal Australian Survey Corps, which was established to produce contour maps from photographs. Green’s unit travelled between Darwin, Brisbane and the Torres Strait, charting towns and waterways and producing data vital for the war effort. During this period, Green still found time to sketch, producing hundreds of watercolours and pen-and-ink drawings. After the unit was demobilised in 1946, Green returned to Melbourne to study at the National Gallery School. Winning the National Gallery of Victoria Travelling Scholarship in 1947, Green travelled to England where he studied under Bernard Meninsky at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts between 1948 and 1950; further study and European travel ensued. In 1952, Green returned to Melbourne, where he began to experiment with expressionist and cubist styles. He continued to exhibit for the rest of his life.
