Thousands of dots of colour rain across the surface this painting, denoting the brilliantly coloured flora of the region and the geographical sites sacred to the Bush Plum Dreaming. Her vibrant brushwork imbues the work with a sense of movement and plenty.
To the initiated eye, Kathleen Ngal’s paintings can be read quite literally as maps showing where these prized foods can be found and their related women’s ceremonial sites, while also celebrating her Country, Arlparra, and the bush plum — its associated stories, country, ceremonies and obligations. Speaking of the work, Ngal remarked:
Pretty, pretty country, my country, all my country, Arlparra, bush plum, flowers, all the flowers, white flowers coming out now all over my country.
