Georges Pierre was a French master horn-carver renowned for his Art Nouveau jewellery. Cicada pendant necklace features three finely detailed cicadas: the central insect is framed by a delicate mandala of ivy leaves, and two further cicadas adorn the cord above. The blue droplet at the base of the pendant suggests the symbolic element of water, completing the overall tableaux vivant by creating a harmony of flora, fauna and climatic element.
Cicada pendant necklace is exemplary of the Art Nouveau style, where the appreciation of nature, long lines and flowing, organic motifs were born from a sympathy with Japanese design. The finely carved detail and delicate colouration of this piece demonstrate the deftness with which Pierre worked and his skill in manipulating the complex material of horn.
