Polychromed (multicoloured) wood statues were commonly made in Germany in the late medieval period to decorate churches and altarpieces. Little is known of this figure; however, his pose was frequently used to represent church fathers such as Saint Augustine or Saint Ambrose, who were often shown seated and holding a book.
Over time, much of the polychrome and varnish has faded and left a residue on the wood, indicating the age of this piece. The features have also been flattened by the passage of time, yet the remaining drapery and pose of the figure suggest serenity and concentration.
