Created between 1916 and 1924, these early studies demonstrate Fairweather’s astute use of line and colour to recreate moments in time, while also showing his development as an artist. In (Church interior with female figure), there is a lightness of touch to the simplicity with which Fairweather captures the scene. The style in which (Mountain gorge with snow-capped range in the distance) is painted may have been inspired by post-impressionist Paul Cézanne’s (1839–1906) exhibition at Lefevre Gallery, London, the same year.
