Although Jacoulet created many sketches and watercolours of his subjects’ traditional body markings, only four prints feature tattoos. They appear in this work on the sitters’ wrists, his thigh and her hands. The women’s markings are believed to indicate that she is a member of the Tarang aristocracy, and by her sennit necklace that she is eligible for marriage. The vivid, watercolour-like hues create a sense of depth between the lovers and their landscape, while also giving a joyous energy to the scene.
