By Jacinta Giles
‘Birds of Passage’ February 2024
Jacoulet dedicated this pair of images — Les Deux Adversaires (Gauche) Corée and Les Deux Adversaires (Droite) Corée 1950 — to then United States’ President Harry S Truman (1884–1972) and sent him a copy at the start of the Korean War. It is the only work Jacoulet created in two parts, symbolic of the relationship between North Korea (officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (or DPRK) and South Korea at the time; it is also a record of the popular ‘sport’ of cockfighting. The shirtless men hold roosters ready for battle, against a backdrop of a jagged mountain range that stands out against the sky, believed to represent T'aebaek Mountains that extend from south-eastern North Korea into South Korea along the eastern coast.
