This print has one of the most ornate and dense floral backgrounds Jacoulet ever created to frame his sitters. It features an intricate representation of multiple botanic species and was created in the same year as the similarly detailed print Cactus, Mer du Sud 1941. Set in Tokyo in winter, the wealthy female subject is celebrating her 88th birthday dressed in a magnificent vermillion kimono and seated on a purple cushion. The sitter holds two painted wooden dolls in her outstretched arms. Her childhood toys evoke memories of her youth. In the background hangs her richly embroidered wedding kimono, representing another part of her life’s story.
