Wrapped around Dove of Peace 2000 is the kluthuthu (dove), whose outstretched wings envelop this narrow-necked conch sphere in a swooping hug. Understanding the dove as a symbol of peace via her Christian upbringing at the Weipa Mission, Thanakupi has drawn attention to it by finely incising its outline and in-filling the negative space. The black and white forms of positive and negative space were, to Thanakupi, a symbol of reconciliation in Australia.
Thanakupi referred to her narrow-necked spheres as ‘one-flower pots’, due to the tiny openings – enough for a single stem. This form demonstrates the variations of her iconic spheres and gives her symbolic world material shape.
