In 1970, John Baldessari burned everything he had made between 1953 and 1966, in a gesture that signalled a shift from painting to his ongoing explorations of image and text. The comparatively new technology of video allowed Baldessari to examine and reinvent categories and definitions of art through actions, text and sound. In I am making art, the artist uses humour and puns to parody the hermetic aspects of contemporary art practice.
