LABEL: 2008.240 DEMAND

August 2018
To create his artworks, Thomas Demand meticulously recreates found photographs in large-scale models using paper and cardboard, before producing a single, carefully lit and composed image. Demand’s photographs point to the fact that images are always constructed, and question their claim to be accurate documents of the world.
Landing is based on a conservator’s photograph of an unfortunate incident at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England: a man tripped over his shoelaces, fell down the stairs, and knocked over the museum's most valuable objects – three Qing dynasty vases. The title of the work, while also being an architectural term, describes the undeniably slapstick fate of both the man and the vases.
