LABEL: 2020.390 INKAMALA

In this work, Kathy Inkamala provides a scathing commentary on the state of Aboriginal housing in Papunya, particularly that of overcrowding. Across Australia, Indigenous households are more than three times as likely than other households to be overcrowded, and this statistic increases the more remote a community is.
Using a cheap nylon moving or storage bag, Inkamala paints a vibrant landscape on one side, and words of urgent protest on the other. The cheap nylon bag, commonly associated with migrant and homeless populations, is a symbol of displacement and hardship. On one side, Inkamala issues placard style text to deliver an overt political statement regarding overcrowding of Indigenous households, while on the other side she depicts Mt Hermannsburg at Ntaria.
