One of Albert Namatjira’s grandsons, Kevin Namatjira is a skilled watercolourist and was taught to paint by his father, Maurice. His cool scenes are easily distinguished from the many fiery depictions of the intense desert landscape.
In this work, Namatjira depicts a landscape belonging to Serpentine Gorge — a narrow gap in the West MacDonnell Ranges, some 100 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Serpentine Gorge is a sacred site to Western Arrernte people. In Western Arrernte, the site is referred to as Ulpma. The Dreaming story associated with the site relates to an Eaglehawk ancestor, the full story of which can only be told to local initiated Aboriginal men.
