BIO: Josephine Müntz-Adams
1861, Barfold, VIC – 1949, Melbourne
Josephine Müntz-Adams was the eldest of ten children born to surveyor Thomas Bingham Müntz and his wife Jane (nee Jamison). She studied in Melbourne at the National Gallery School under GF Folingsby, in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Delécluse, and for two years under Hubert von Herkomer at the art school in Bushey, England. Müntz-Adams married Samuel Adams in 1898 at Hawksburn in Melbourne, and made her home in Brisbane until her husband’s sudden death in 1903; during her time in Brisbane she taught and exhibited extensively. In 1917, she returned to Brisbane, where she taught at the Central Technical College until her retirement in 1922; she also served on the Queensland National Art Gallery’s Advisory Committee. Müntz-Adams died on 18 November 1949 in Windsor in Melbourne, but was buried alongside her husband at Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane.
