After obtaining his law qualifications in London, Robert Saunder Rayment returned to art, his first interest, becoming a pupil of John Ruskin in 1870. However, very little is known of his career in England. In 1887, he migrated to Brisbane and a month after his arrival, he exhibited watercolours of local subjects at the National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland. His first two years in Queensland were spent travelling and painting pictures, some on commission for land and station owners. He also contributed paintings to the Queensland Court at the Centennial International Exhibition, held in Melbourne in 1888. Rayment’s active career in Queensland lasted just six years, as he died suddenly on 18 August 1893 at Cleveland.
