BIO: Joy Roggenkamp

Joy Roggenkamp began private art study in 1943 under Percy Stanhope Hobday. In 1944, she attended Brisbane’s Central Technical College, but returned to private tuition in 1945, and in the late 1950s, she took classes with Jon Molvig. Roggenkamp was undoubtedly the most significant watercolour artist in Brisbane in the 1960s and 1970s. Her first major award was the Queensland Art Gallery’s LJ Harvey Memorial Prize for Drawing in 1959, but her great successes were realised at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, where she was awarded the Trustees’ Watercolour Prize (1962) and the Pring Prize (1966 and 1967). Roggenkamp held exhibitions at the prestigious Johnstone Gallery in Brisbane (1960, 1962, 1964 and 1969), and in the years leading up to 1980, she held at least another eight solo exhibitions in Brisbane and interstate.
