BIO: James Wieneke
1906, Bundaberg, Queensland – 1981, Brisbane
James Frederick Wieneke studied at Brisbane’s Central Technical College under FJ Martyn Roberts. In the late 1940s, he taught drawing, design and art history at a number of secondary schools in Brisbane, and in 1949–50, he was the art critic for Brisbane’s Telegraph newspaper. He was a member of the Royal Queensland Art Society and its council from 1940 until February 1942, when he joined the army. From February 1942 until February 1946, Wieneke served with the 2nd AIF (Australian Imperial Force) Royal Australian Engineers. Late in 1944, an exhibition of New Guinea watercolours by Wieneke and Hal Sergeant was held in Sydney, and in 1946, Wieneke published 6th Div. Sketches: Aitape to Wewak, a collection of sketches, drawings and notes from the 6th Division’s last New Guinea campaign (1944–45). Wieneke directed Moreton Galleries in Brisbane (1950–67) and served as Director of the Queensland National Art Gallery from 1967 to 1974.
