In ‘the holes in the land’ 2015 series of prints, Watson continues her decades-long practice of researching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural material within collecting institutions. This series resulted from Watson’s participation as artistic fellow at the British Museum, where she was granted access to what she calls ‘the bowels of the museum’.
Across these prints, Watson superimposes images of cultural objects — including a pituri bag (for native tobacco), wooden clubs from Moreton Bay and an apron’ from Mara Country (a neighbouring Aboriginal nation) — onto architectural drawings of the British Museum. Watson recorded the available information about these objects from their record labels. Often there are little to no details recorded, or, even worse, incorrect information. These objects leave trace indentations — holes — to indicate both their removal from Country and the loss felt by Indigenous peoples who await their return.
