The Kalibobo design first appeared in 2006 and is attributed to a Highlander woman who travelled to the coastal town of Madang to sell produce at the markets. She was struck by the distant view of the Kalibobo lighthouse in silhouette and created a bilum pattern to remind her of her trip to the coast. Worked in a dazzling combination of red, black and yellow, Jaukae-Kamel’s interpretation visually throbs, enabling the dress, like the lighthouse, to attract passers-by.
