Mt Hagen, in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, is a place where traditional cultures and beliefs remain strong. As an Eastern Highlands woman, Kamel appropriated the Western Highlands bilum-wear design of the woven dancing apron, which is only worn by men.
The artist’s inspiration flowed from her research into Papua New Guinea's colonial era, when white women wore hooped dresses and her ancestors wore Purpur (grass skirts). The lower ringed segment of the garment recalls the wide-hipped grass skirts worn by women from the Trobriand Islands.
