One of the most anticipated sporting fixtures of the year used to be between the Essendon Bombers and the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL), who were once the two best teams in the competition. Many Aboriginal people are dedicated fans of Aussie Rules football and many gifted Indigenous sportsmen, such as Joe Johnson, ‘Polly' Farmer, ‘Nicky' Winmar, Andrew McLeod, Gavin Wanganeen, Jeff Farmer and Michael Long, have played AFL.
