Billy Benn was influenced by the tradition of the Hermannsburg School of landscape painting while living in Alice Springs and has combined this with the bright, colourful and highly gestural Alyawarre painting style to depict his country around Utopia. Comparisons between Billy Benn and Albert Namatjira go beyond the fact that both artists’ works represent physical landscapes of traditional country in a Western pictorial style. When asked about the influence Namatjira’s art had on him, Benn replied through Bindi Art Coordinator, Matt Goff: ‘Billy has great respect for Namatjira. He likes his paintings a lot and he always talks about Namatjira’s paintings. He is the only artist Billy talks about and respects’.
