Edwin Pareroultja began painting in 1943, when his first attempt astounded the painting group’s advisor, Rex Battarbee, who noted: ‘The greatest impression any artist has ever made on me was on 25th October 1943, when Edwin showed me his first watercolour’. Battarbee encouraged Edwin to develop his own style and not to emulate that of Albert. His new style, inspired by the symmetries and patterns found in nature, was very successful and would lay the foundations for other artists to paint their own way, including Edwin’s elder brother, Otto.
