The late Klaus Moje is regarded among the most influential figures in Australian glass. He is remembered both for his own achievements and as the mentor of a generation of students at the Canberra School of Art. (The Collection includes work by some of his students, such as Jessica Loughlin and Scott Chaseling.) In 1982, Moje was hired to establish and lead the School’s Glass Workshop, where he advanced and taught kiln-forming techniques that, over the next decade, came to dominate studio glass in Australia.
Born in Hamburg in 1936, Moje brought with him a rigorous, skill-based approach founded on his Bauhaus training, as well as an understanding of Egyptian and Roman mosaic glass methods. He had begun refining the technique just prior to his appointment in collaboration with the Bullseye Glass Company, Portland, Oregon, and would go on to perfect the method in works such as Split form 1987, characterised by its striking chevron pattern and the Bauhaus-inspired palette of the glass that bisects it.
