Daphne Mayo had great compassion for Aboriginal people, as shown by her sensitive portrayals in her bronze doors for the Public Library of New South Wales (1940–42). This head was modelled from an Arrernte child from Central Australia; according to family legend, Mayo encountered the child in a hospital. The head was the most popular of all her sculptures, judging by the many casts surviving in public and private collections.
