The intermingled figures in this layered work depict the supreme god of Fiji, Degei, in serpent form; his son, Naqai; and a bird. It is said that Degei resided in a cave in the mountains of Rakiraki in western Fiji. The birds in that district were plentiful and their chirping could be heard day and night. One night, the noise of the birds was so loud that Degei could not sleep, so he asked his son to order the birds to sleep far from his cave. Today, the native birds leave the Nacilau area just after sunset and do not return until after sunrise the next day.
