The noise created by waves breaking over the reefs that surround Rakiraki District in Fiji is known to be significantly quieter than any other reef break around the island. The legends of this place share that this was not always the case. The supreme god in Fiji, Degei, is believed to reside in a cave in the mountains of Rakiraki. It is said that Degei ordered one of his subjects to silence the reefs as the noise was interrupting his thoughts and sleep. The artwork depicts Degei and the subjects he commanded for this purpose.
