Richard Whiteley casts complex glass sculptures that are both architectural and anthropomorphic in form. Born in England in 1963, Whiteley trained at the Canberra Art School under Klaus Moje AO (1936–2016), founding workshop head of the Australian National University’s (ANU) School of Art Glass Workshop. He received a scholarship to continue his studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (attending 1989–91), where he earned a Master of Fine Arts.
For over 15 years, Whiteley led the ANU School of Art Glass Workshop, Canberra, before relocating to Corning, New York in 2019, where he is Senior Programs Manager for The Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass. His work is held in collections around the world, including China Academy of Art, Hangzhou; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; QAGOMA, Brisbane; National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh; and, in the USA: Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia; Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Lowe Art Museum, Miami, Florida; Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon; and Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio.
