Waumer, the frigatebird (Fregata minor), is a significant personal totem for Thaiday and a frequent theme in his work. Waumer breeds on Bramble Cay, a sand bank not far from Erub (Darnley Island), and lays its eggs – a delicacy gathered by local people – in soft grasses. Groups of up to 30 birds can be seen circling the high points of Erub before swooping on the bait fish swimming close to the shoreline in great numbers. The presence of frigatebirds can also indicate rough weather, warning fishermen not to venture far out to sea.
This version shows a new-born frigatebird flying over Erub as the sun rises over the coast. String pulleys can be manipulated to animate it as if in flight.
