In 2017 artist Tony Albert was invited to the remote communities of Warakurna and Patjarr in Ngaanyatjarra (Yarnangu) Country, Western Australia, to work collaboratively with the local art centre, Warakurna Artists. For this project, Albert worked with the children of Warakurna on a photographic series that brought together Albert’s use of vintage objects and the Warakurna artists’ recycling of discarded materials – ranging from shipping containers to car bonnets. In creating this series, the children took the lead, dressing as pop-cultural heroes and role-playing in their playground amongst the detritus on the outskirts of town. The resulting images depict the participants as heroic definers of their own power and destiny. The artist explains:
For this series, the children of Warakurna were the bosses. They made the costumes and found the locations. It was very important for me that they all became co-authors of the work.
