Darren Siwes’s works explore themes of history, colonialism and Indigenous identity. In Stand (monument), the artist’s transparent figure appears to haunt the site in front of an Adelaide war memorial. The work asks questions about Indigenous presence in nation-building narratives associated with ANZAC memorialisation.
Meticulously crafted with no digital manipulation, Siwes’s self-portraits are photographed with multiple long exposures, during which he enters and exits the frame. He uses a silver dye-bleach printing process to create a shimmering, reflective surface that enhances the ghostly effect of the image.
