Joe Jones’s Music box reimagines a guitar as a sound sculpture, where the instrument is ‘played’ by the revolutions of a rubber strip attached to a small electric motor. The resulting sound is a low harmonic drone with subtle variations as the strings are struck randomly. A musical device that would usually be held and played by a human musician, Jones’s device upends its original intention and instead transforms the instrument into a mechanised form of creativity.
