From Dreamtime 2 Machinetime is a meeting of traditional Aboriginal imagery and modern technology. Divided into two sections, the top half presents traditional dot and line techniques, with the figures reminiscent of rock paintings. Similar figures in the lower half are robot-like, with the dots creating computer chips. The work explores the duality of modern life, highlighting the tension between incessant technological presence in an urban environment and the spiritual sustenance offered by connection to Country and the natural landscape. This painting imagines the great changes Aboriginal peoples have adapted to in a short time. Nickolls explained:
My life evolves around painting and drawing. I incorporate Aboriginal and Western techniques and symbolism to make contemporary art that relates to both cultures today. My paintings are to share with everyone. I look to bridge the gap between Western art and Aboriginal art. My work is a balancing act, like walking a tightrope between my dreams and my life when I'm awake – from Dreamtime to Machinetime.
