Since the mid-1990s, Australian artist Geoff Kleem has examined the idea of objects – their placement and their perceived necessity within contemporary life. A contraption that cleverly reflects on the balance between form and function, Untitled interrogates what constitutes a work of art. The base of the sculpture is reminiscent of a utilitarian piece of equipment, such as a hospital trolley. The upper half of the sculpture, however, has cheekily abandoned its purpose: a display case invites the viewer to peer in at a precious object, and instead displays nothing but a mysterious void.
